Substrates

Thanks to smart and functional coatings, any substrate can be turned functional, which can render a wall, car or building self-cleaning, graffiti resistant or antimicrobial.

Metal

The use of hazardous Cr3+ and Cr6+ or thick epoxy systems  has been for a long time the solution to prevent corrosion on metal surfaces.

A new approach is through chemical conversion coatings. These are coatings that chemically convert the top layer of the metal into an inert barrier. A successful way to achieve this is by applying sol-gel chemistry. With sol-gel coatings only a nano layer of the metal surface is converted to inert oxides like SiO2, ZrO2 or Al2O3, which are resistant to heat, acids and chlorine attack. Other ways to prevent corrosion use organic conversion coatings based on nano resins, whereby the nano polymer converts to a monolayer. This has the advantage of creating inorganic and organic hybrids that develop a hydrophobic and easy to clean finish in addition to corrosion protection.

For top coats we offer several nano-resins able to provide:

  • Easy to clean properties
  • Anti-fingerprint properties
  • Anti-graffiti performances
  • Resistance to mechanical abrasion
  • Resistance to chemical attack
  • Ultra-hard finishes

Formulations with these resins can be room temperature, force or flash cured.

Glass

With our nano resins, formulators can either provide hydrophobic or superhydrophilic surfaces without compromising on transparency.

As an example, with our hydrophobic technology, car windscreens will pearl off rain water even without using wipers.

With our superhydrophilic and photocatalytic nano titanium oxide, glass can be made self-cleaning, or when used on solar cells, retain the efficiency of the PV panel for an extended period of time.

Plastics

Plastics need coatings mainly for the aesthetic effect. Without surface treatment most plastics are dull. A coating brings additional effects to the surface, as well as making any colour desired possible. Adhesion to low energy plastics such as poly carbonate, polypropylene or EPDM can be a real issue. Our nano resins stick extremely well to plastic surfaces and functionalise them into for example easy to clean or anti-fingerprint.

Formulations based on our antimicrobial resins are making plastic surfaces hygienically clean. These antimicrobial resins do not leach out and therefore remain active over time.

Concrete

Untreated concrete may easily stain due to its porous structure. A concrete surface coated using our superhydrophobic technology shows contact angles with water of more than 140o. Hence such surface will not wet nor stain. Water running of the surface will remove dirt and dust from that same surface.

Another way of functionalizing concrete surfaces is by applying coatings based on our superhydrophilic photocatalytic nano titanium oxide technology. These coatings show self-cleaning behaviour due to two effects:

  • Organic dirt oxidation and mineralization
  • Water sheeting effect, flushing down dirt and inorganic particles

Consequently surfaces remain visibly cleaner.
